kitchen update

It all started with replacing the old, dated hardware on the cabinets in the kitchen.
As a kitchen designer, I had designed at least 27 new kitchens in three different manufacturers and finishes, ultimately deciding the bathroom projects were a greater priority on the budget, but wanted to refresh the look.

Working with an existing pallet, in a 150 year old farmhouse, was a challenge. Ten years ago we refinished the 1 1/4" red and white oak hardwood floors on the main level. The moldings and cabinets are all oak, as well as pieces like the dining room table. At the time we did slate in the front entryway.

Last year, renovating the 1/2 bath on the main level, we chose Smartcore Pro in Twilight, and decided to carry the look through the kitchen and mudroom. I did not want to do tile again in the kitchen and had decided on vinyl plank. I like the warmer, more cushioned surface.

We also removed the ladder molding on the top of the cabinets, leaving a clean line across the top. This made a huge difference to the look and reduced shadow above the cabinets. The uppers are 42" and the ceilings are 108"

We replaced the ceiling fan with a cleaner look, and reframed some pictures to black frames.

Today the new quartz countertops will be installed, replacing the old yellow laminate tops.

  1. Is there enough space between the cabinets and the ceiling to do accent lighting?
